Barbara Allen (Oct 2006)
AGE: 53
PROFESSION: Owner, Video Production Company
BACKGROUND: In June of 2005, I was organizing my photos and was shocked to notice how much weight I had gained in progressive pictures over the years. I was highly motivated to get into shape. I began taking my dog on long walks in a local canyon, doing exercises at home and changing my eating habits. After a couple of months it was time to kick it up a notch, and I began searching for a real challenge. I found Sonki Fitness on the web…and took the plunge one year ago. Attending that first class took me way outside my comfort zone. I hadn’t worked out in years. I was overweight. I thought everyone was going to be much younger than me and much fitter. But somehow Sonki made me feel comfortable immediately. I was encouraged and stuck with it.
Through a combination of Sonki’s program and a significant change in my diet, I have lost 30 pounds…and my strength and endurance have improved dramatically.
How long have you been working out? I have worked out sporadically over the years. But I have never been as consistent as I have for the past year in Sonki’s program. By the way, I never ran in my life. I was shocked when I was asked to run a mile the second class I attended. I discovered that I actually enjoy it…and I like what it has done for my health.
What is your current exercise routine? I work out three times a week at the boot camp. I still take my dog on hikes a couple of times a week and I do some exercises at home on my own.
What is your motivation to stay in shape? I like feeling strong and like the way I look at a healthy weight.
What is your greatest challenge to staying in shape? Keeping my diet in control. I like good food, what can I say?
What is your key to success? Sticking with the program I set for myself…and not giving up when I have a couple of bad days.
How long have you been doing Sonki Fitness Boot Camp? One year, since September 2005.
What do you like about Sonki Fitness Boot Camp and how has it affected your life? Sonki Fitness Boot Camp has had a really significant impact on my life. I have made the classes a priority. I feel as though the only thing I have to do is show up. Once I’m at the class the motivation kicks in big time. I like the variety. It’s hard to dread the workout when you don’t know exactly what the workout is going to be! I like the combination of self motivation, group support and Sonki’s encouragement. It works for me. And I love working out at the beach early in the morning, it makes me appreciate the beautiful place I live in.
What advice would you give to others about fitness? Go outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself.
